Caving is genuinely dangerous. That was what made me want to write something, but I wasn't saying that kids should be casually going into caves. I was raised as a free range kid. I walked half a mile to school on my own every day when I was in first grade. By fifth grade it was normal for me to do what I felt like with my time between the end of school and dinner, and on weekends and the summer. When I was in high school I was frequently out well past midnight with college kids. (Of course these were college kids who wanted to talk about science fiction, and my mom and I were both members of the science fiction club. But having that freedom meant I never felt like I needed to hang out with less desirable older kids.) If my mom chose to give me that kind of freedom today, she would at best receive condemnation from the community and quite possibly a visit from child protective services.
