Virtual Mats

I was poking around the Internet and I found this software that does "virtual mats" -- extending a photo around all four sides with something that looks like a mat.

For you folks who have seen my framed prints -- is this a cheesy concept I should steer clear of, or a clever way to make home-printed images more attractive?
