After I got home from a long day at EFRC, extremely tired and ready to fall over, I put my ice pack back in the freezer, and noticed there was a pool of gunk in the bottom of the freezer. I quickly discovered that all the meat in the freezer is thawed; I have maybe 25 lbs. of meat to throw away. Things don't seem to be cold enough in the regular fridge either.

My fridge is 22 years old -- I bought it when I moved in. So I'm probably due for a new one. But I don't have money for it, even on a non-panic basis. I don't think there's a good time for this to happen but coming home on a Saturday evening, totally exhausted, and with things to do tomorrow other than trying to shop for a new appliance, this seems like a particularly bad time.

Hope it's a good day for [livejournal.com profile] birder2 and all other moms out there.

FKO

Safe home from FKO, but pretty tired. The drive up had an annoying amount of rain and we had the car searched and had to talk to customs. The con seemed to run smoothly, though I was pretty tired for the whole weekend. Both Friday and Saturday, I went into a small room and the room ended up closing down rather than developing into a filk, and when I packed up my stuff I was too dead to start again in another room. Sunday we had a good filk in the dead penguin and I got several songs in. High point of the con for me was getting to spring "Garnet's Home-Made Beer" on the Guests of Honour. The drive home was uneventful, US customs didn't have any problems letting us back in.

I ought to say more about the con, but this is all I have the energy for right now.

Just a quick note that I've made it safely home from FCN, as far as my mom's place at least. The con was fun. I'm tired. I might manage to say something more substantial but not right now.

Safely home from GAFilk. The con was fun and much needed; unfortunately I started out so depressed that I was just coming up to being alive by the time it ended. The drive down was slightly delayed by one interstate-blocking accident on Thursday, but other than that was smooth enough. Coming home was problem free, but I feel rather rung out now.

FNM

I played vamps again in FNM. I went 3-1, but with the loss in the first round my tiebreaks were awful and I finished 5th out of 16.

FNM

I decided to give my tokens/lifegain deck a rest for a week, so I tried my vampire deck. It was announced that Standard would henceforth only run 4 rounds even when there are enough people that it should run 5. I have mixed feelings, because 5 rounds really runs too late for afterdraft, but on the other hand, not having enough rounds for a real winner sucks.

Anyway, for this week, I went 2-2, somewhat underwhelming. the deck and details )

My tiebreaks were good and I won 1 pack; my door prize was the common batch. Afterdraft started early, by 11. I thought I drafted an OK deck, red and black, good creatures, not much removal. Match 1, I beat James Manrique in a hard fought 3 games. Beating James in draft is always an achievement. Match 2 against Cy I mulled to 5 and got walked on game 1, then I came back and won the other two games fairly easily. This let me face Phil Stanton, another player I expect to lose to, in round 3. Game 1, he hit two of my good creatures with Pacifism and took me down. Game 2, I made a major misplay; I failed to realize that Fit of Rage is a sorcery, and tried to cast it in combat after the creature I'd loaded up with Deviant Glee, which needed first strike to not trade with the Giant Scorpion blocking it. After that screwup I needed to draw really lucky and I didn't. Still, I was 2-1. Somehow, I did not win a pack.

I didn't play any magic after last FNM, during my carless week, so I had the same deck as I did last week. I did rather poorly.

Finally

Got the car back at 5 yesterday. In addition to replacing the clutch and slave cylinder, they replaced the transmission which didn't work when connected to the car hydraulics. They also replaced a wheel bearing (which I hadn't realized was out) and did the oil change and tires as scheduled. They couldn't fix the odometer, so it's still pinned at 299999. But it runs, it shifts smoothly, and I have my own car so I don't have to borrow [livejournal.com profile] birder2's to access my own bed, kitchen, desktop computer, etc., which has been a pain for both of us the last week.

They didn't charge me for labor for replacing the transmission, so I got a substantial discount, but it still cost a great deal. So I fervently hope that it will be a couple of years before I have to really think about a new car.

I've pretty much given up on reviewing the books that I read, but now and again I'll come across something I have to talk about.

Such a book is The Silvered by Tanya Huff.

I won't claim to be objective. First, in addition to being one of my favorite writers, Tanya is a friend. (I can't really claim she's a close friend, but only because she lives way off in Canada and I get to talk to her for a few minutes about once a year. But I look forward to those minutes.) Second, this is a book about werewolves, and I'm a sucker for werewolves. So I guess all I can say is I really enjoyed reading this. It was painful to read in places, because it is entirely too believable about some of of the failings of humans. It was more painful to read because it's not real and I have to leave that world and come back to the world where my car self destructed. A magic system that seems to be internally consistent, without being explained to death, with a couple of bits that I can't get behind, but I'm willing to let them go. A rich world that seems plenty big enough to hold more stories, even though this particular story is pretty complete. A book you should definitely run out and buy, because if you don't enjoy it your taste in books is too different for us to talk, and even if you don't, Tanya needs to pay for her house repairs so she can come to cons more often so I can spend a few more minutes in her wonderful company.

10 out of 10.

My car is not fixed. They had it taken apart, they said everything seemed to be OK. They put it back together with the new clutch and slave cylinder and it would not shift -- the transmission seems to work when they shift it by hand but it doesn't work when connected to the hydraulics.

I think I need a new car, and I don't even know where to start. What I've been able to find with Google so far has been very unhelpful -- all the sites start by asking what make and model you want. I don't know what make and model I want, I want as cheap a car as I can find that fits my needs: has to be reliable, has to get decent gas mileage, I would distinctly prefer a hatchback with a manual transmission. I don't care what make it is as long as it's not something exotic that's super expensive to maintain.

Car update

I got the keys to the mechanic early this morning. Late this morning, I got the news -- the clutch and slave cylinder have to be replaced, the rest of the transmission is hopefully fixable. For quite a painful amount of money, but not quite enough to give up on the car. So I'll get the car back tomorrow or Thursday.

I just hope that I'm right in thinking that the car is basically sound and it will last a couple more years.

FNM report

I didn't play much magic in November; I missed 3 FNMs in a row going to cons. So my deck, which seemed good at the beginning of the month, apparently got stale. It's almost the same as it was last time, but it underperformed this week.

the long winded details )

I went up to Mt. Prospect for the housefilk at [livejournal.com profile] chaoticgoodchic's house last night. The trip up was completely uneventful, the dinner was nice, the music and companionship were good. I got back in my car at 1:00, figuring I'd make it to bed about 4, I'd be tired but it should be OK. It rained off and on as I was driving home, but had no problems, until I got to the interchange between I-57 and I-74. I can't remember exactly what happened. The car suddenly started making a disturbing noise, but I can't remember if it was before I touched the gearshift to slow down for the ramp or not. But on the ramp, the car made "pull over right now" noises, and it was in neutral. The engine was still running but not delivering power. I got onto the shoulder and tried to force the car into first. It didn't want to go, and then it popped right out again. Clearly something is very wrong with the transmission. And it's 3:30 AM Sunday, and I'm a little too tired to think completely clearly.

After a few minutes, I pulled myself together enough to look on the net on my phone, find a tow truck, and have it sent out. Then I texted a friend who is often up at that hour. I had the car towed to the mechanic, my friend gave me a ride to my mom's (thanks Jeremy!), and I spent the night there.

Tune in tomorrow for the next exciting installment of Phil's Car Explodes, Now What?, when I hopefully find out what is wrong with the car, and whether it will take a few hundred dollars and a couple of hours to fix, or thousands of dollars and weeks (in which case, I will have to somehow find another car).

Pinned

As you know if you know me very well, my car is getting kinda long in the tooth as it were. In fact, I was approaching a milestone -- 300000 miles. I was getting all ready to take a cellphone pic of all the zeroes and post it. I was leaving EFRC and it was at 299997, so I'd hit it before I got to the interstate, so I could pull over. All good, I'm driving through Center Point, I roll to 299999, driving along, waiting for it to roll over. And waiting, and waiting, and it never does.

My odometer is pinned at 299999 miles. I've driven about 150 miles and it hasn't changed.

It's digital, so somebody specifically programmed it this way. The trip odometers and speedometer still work so it's not some amazingly timed mechanical failure.

Dear President Obama,

In the aftermath of your reelection, all of the talk is turning to the so-called fiscal cliff, and almost all politicians are saying we need to reach a compromise. Please, as you again try to get the Republican house to be slightly reasonable, keep the important things in mind. Our fiscal problems are not primarily that government is too big and doing things it should be doing; they are primarily caused because we're not collecting enough taxes to pay for them. The money has to come from the people who have it, and we are in the hole we're in now because the Republicans somehow mesmerized the rest of Congress into accepting the idea that the rich shouldn't pay taxes. We can't fix the budget without ending the favorable treatment of dividends and capital gains. Additionally, much of the social division tearing our country apart is caused by growing inequality of wealth, which flows directly from the fact that people with less money pay higher tax rates than people with more money.

Yes, talk to the Republicans. Keep trying to bring them to a sane compromise. But don't agree to anything that taxes divdends and capital gains -- also known as rich people's money -- significantly less than wages. Going over the fiscal cliff now may make things a little tougher for a couple of years, but making the tax holiday for the rich permanent will make sure that things continue getting worse for ordinary people forever.

In just a few more hours, the nightmare of the election will be over. If Obama wins, we can try to move forward getting something done in spite of the obstructionists. If he loses, then the real nightmare begins.

I suppose it's unlikely that any of the three people who read my journal are at all undecided, but please, if you haven't cast your vote for Obama, get out and do it. This election is too close. Your vote matters. Obama is not a perfect candidate, but if Romney wins, we'll have a Supreme Court that will criminalize abortion, reverse the gains made on gay rights, and further extend the control of the rich and the corporations over all aspects of life. If Romney wins, the people who think short term corporate profits are more important than whether we still have an earth in a hundred years get to run the EPA again. If Romney wins, the party that thinks that only rich people should get health care gets to run Medicare and Medicaid, and they've promised to repeal the crappy compromise on health care that was as much reform as they allowed to happen.

Magic stuff

Three weeks back, when I won FNM, I got two Pack Rats in my prize packs, so I actually played a rat deck two weeks back. It did very poorly, and I don't think I'll be visiting it again. Maybe there is something good to do with Pack Rat, but the obvious standard deck -- 4 of each of the rats for the creatures, plus some discard effects, splashing green for Rancor -- just doesn't cut it. One week back, I was at OVFF, so I missed FNM and Game Day. I was back for FNM yesterday, with the four color deck I played few weeks ago, with a few tweaks.

Went 4-1, seemed pretty darn good. )

Between the two events, I played 8 matches, and I lost the roll to go first every single time. Feels pretty normal to me.
tigertoy: (Default)
I never posted about last week's FNM. did poorly, but got some good stuff )

This week, Standard, I did good. won the whole thing! )

I skipped afterdraft to return to the store at 11 for the Deck-Builder's Toolkit Beatdown, but unfortunately, nobody else showed and the event didn't happen. Played a couple of games of 1-1 EDH (Ghave is so broken), then came back home rather than sit around in the store alone.

The annual Pet Fair Extravaganza is next weekend at Prairieland Feeds in Savoy. EFRC will have a booth there and we'll have a cat, I assume a tiger, although as of today the keepers don't know which one. I told Jean I'd be there to help Saturday. So come out and say hi, next weekend, Oct. 6-7, 10 AM-5 PM, and buy a calendar or a T shirt or something else nifty. (I will only be there Saturday, but Jean and the tiger will be there Sunday.) And buy dog food at probably the best price of the year.
