"Whinge"

I see the word "whinge" showing up more and more on LiveJournal.  I'm trying to understand if it's just "whine" misspelled, or if it's supposed to rhyme with "cringe", and also if that extra G carries some subtle shade of meaning that I'm missing.

Please enlighten me, for this has been a minor burr in my saddle for months.  Am I just becoming a curmudgeon?  Is there a point that I've missed?  Does this usage annoy other people too?

It's British for "whine." I think it's pronounced as you think. But being a big-city provincial USian, I know it from written language only, so am guessing at that.

It doesn't annoy me when used by a real British English speaker. It DOES annoy me when it's used as an affectation.

Oh, by the way, I had no idea you read my journal. Or if I did I forgot. I know your LJ name from other people's journals, but if I know you in RL my memory is failing me. So, hi! Just to be perfectly clear, since some people have weird ideas about LJ, I'm always pleased to have anyone come along and read anything I post publicly here.

It's UK slang, and it denotes a level of whining that's one up from your average whine :)

Doesn't annoy me, but I've also spent plenty of time interacting with people from the UK.

part of the original description I saw for it was a human personification of the noise a very loud creaky door makes, with somewhat the same frequency of reoccurance.

I picked it up when I was in England. It's just so perfect. Somehow better than whining. Slightly different in meaning I believe too, as filkerdave pointed out. (good heavens! There's a bat in our house!) ahem... sorry....
