Chambanacon
Nov. 21st, 2005 04:06 pmI meant to post something about this earlier, and somehow it slipped my mind.
Chambanacon is this weekend. It's unfortunately still in Springfield, not in Champaign-Urbana, but it's still a good time. I hope that some people are planning to go -- I've very distressed that several people that I think should be there have told me they're not coming.
In case anyone hasn't heard -- Chambanacon has never been very good at publicity, and this year has been weaker than some -- Tim Zahn is the Guest of Honor. Long time C-U residents will remember that Tim used to live in Urbana at the beginning of his writing career. I'm pretty sure I have not seen him since he left, and I can't recall any mention of him having been a guest at any midwest conventions. Doesn't prove he never has, but certainly it's a rare appearance.
Anyone who's coming, make me feel better by saying so. If you're not, you're still my friends, even though certain people not being there really stings. If anyone wants to plan on doing anything at the con, speak up.

Date: 2005-11-22 01:42 pm (UTC)Chambanacon sounds like a nice little relaxacon (from what I've heard).
Unfortunately for them, Chicago TARDIS and Starbase Indy are the same weekend.

Date: 2005-11-22 02:16 pm (UTC)Our son and his SO will be there (it will be her first non-DragonCon convention). We had hoped to have The Grandson so that we could make people Feel Extremely Old, but our daughter really can't come and the logistics of taking him by himself (never mind the multi-state APB and Amber Alerts, which are such a hassle) were a bit too much.
Just remember the mantra - Next Year In Champaign

Date: 2005-11-23 12:39 am (UTC)We all think it sucks, but unfortunately, no hotel is willing to make convention space available at rates the convention can afford. (If memberships had to cost $100 to cover the hotel charge for the function space, and room rates were also $100/night, the con wouldn't be successful.) The hotels don't want an SF con when they can rent all their rooms to rabid high school football parents. And the Chancellor has been knocked down, so things will be even worse in the future, at least until someone gets the bright idea of building some meeting facilities.
