So, pretty much at the last minute, I decided to drop by the icebreaker party for my 25th high school reunion, which is officially tomorrow and Monday.  I actually had a pleasant time meeting and chatting with a bunch of people I haven't seen in 25 years, even though I didn't much like them when I was in high school.  I'm now slightly regretting that I'll miss most of the rest of the reunion, since I didn't decide to go soon enough to reschedule my normal Sunday activities at EFRC, which kill the whole day.

I avoided my previous reunions like the plague, but this time, having my work with the cats and a brand new job to talk about made me feel sufficiently unashamed of being me that I was willing to give it a shot.  High school was not a good time in my life, but judging by the sample that were there, my classmates turned out OK.

I've thought going to several reunions but have always decided against the idea because I suspect the focus of too many attendees will be on rating how successful everybody has been in comparison with themselves. Given I've more or less gone my own way and not tried for traditional forms of success I would no doubt be deemed as something of a failure regardless of how I feel about it. Basicly I'm not interested in being put into such a situation.

Of course it might not turn out that way at all but I don't feel like takign the risk.

The tradition that reunions are where people went to rub their classmates' faces in how successful they were is definitely part of the reason I didn't want to go back, but I really didn't see much of that.

Of course, my high school class is probably not typical, being both very small and very smart. Maybe I should have given them more credit.

Nice icon, btw.

Given what I recall of the people I went through highschool with I expect most of them would be at least polite. However there were a few individuals who even a couple of years after we all finished were pretty eager to point out how much better they were doing than everybody else. Now perhaps they've since been cured of this but given these are people who decided to stay in the large country town where we all grew up I think it's safe to assume they are really into the 'big fish in little pond' thing and I don't want to get caught up in that.

The icon picture is of the king cheetah who recently arrived at my local zoo (http://www.zooquarium.com.au/meetaking.htm) (where I've worked on and off as a volunteer for the last five years). I'm hoping i can find the time soon to go in and meet him.
