Dancing flowers

I took the camera with me on my walk this morning and took some pictures.

If I could do it from home, I'd post one or two in this entry, but I can't update my web space from outside the firewall at work, and my personal page is nowhere near important enough to ask for a change in the company's security policies.

Anyway, I'm used to having trouble with tigers, birds, and bugs not holding still when I'm trying to take a picture. But I feel a little put upon when flowers won't hold still. In other words, it's fairly breezy today. Lovely for walking around, and it makes the pretty flowers dance.

Ah, the bane of the nature photographer---wind. That's one reason I have lots of pictures of moss on rocks. If the rocks are blowing around, then photography is not going to be my priority. For macro photos, the flash is your friend, but that does tend to produce a night effect, with the flower brightly lit by the flash and the background solid black at f/22 and 1/250 or whatever your X-sync speed is. Still, if you want bees on flowers that may be the only choice. Careful choice of background can reduce the blackness.

On a computer geek note, you did say earlier that FTP is blocked by the firewall, and FTP is basically trouble and probably ought to be blocked, but there are more secure alternatives. I'm not suggesting that they ought to run sftpd and open port 115 just for you, but if you don't already know you might check to see if they aren't already doing so for other purposes.

I take a fair number of pictures of bees on flowers from 4' or so with the 300mm zoom lens. I have no problem with natural light for these when it's not in deep shade.

Both of my bosses are horrible workaholics and tend to live at work, so when they do leave, they don't want to take work home with them. Chris does (or at least did at one point) have a VPN setup, because he maintains an apartment in (or maybe it's very close to) the Chicago Loop, but other than that, they don't allow anything into the firewall that can do anything.
