Yesterday, just as I was going out to the car to drive to the lumber yard, a guy in a pickup truck pulled up in my driveway and asked me if I'd be interested in having some recycled asphalt put on my driveway. Seems he had a couple of (small) truckloads of the stuff extra that he needed to get rid of, so he was willing to grade the driveway and spread the stuff for a lot less money than normal. Perhaps it was unwise, since I'm unemployed right now, but my driveway really needed some help. If this stuff performs as expected, it will be much better than the usual mud pit for a long time and it will be money well spent. If I do end up moving to a new job, I think not having a bunch of muddy potholes where the driveway should be will increase the chances of selling this house.

Date: 2008-09-09 08:46 pm (UTC)1.) It could be legit
2.) Stolen from his job site
A.) He could do a good job
B.) He could do a poor job, and you'll need to rip it out later
a.) The material could be great stuff
b.) It could be junk (or contaminated)
Whatever you do, don't pay him in advance...

Date: 2008-09-10 03:22 pm (UTC)This is a local guy from the next teeny town down the road. At least he says he is; I don't know him. But it seems like a great deal of work for very little payoff if it's some kind of a scam. He did bring a crew of 6 guys, a Bobcat, a roller, and two small dumptrucks of ground up road. And the surface he made is how he said it would be today. If it holds up as well as he says, it was a good deal, and if I get a good job I'll call him back for more work. If it falls apart in a year, then I basically paid too much for getting the thing fixed up for another year -- but not that much too much, and if I hadn't done anything (not unlikely) I'd be up to my fenders in mud next spring.

Date: 2008-09-09 11:32 pm (UTC)They had excess gravel when they were done, and kindly augmented our severely depleted & erode, sharply-slanted driveway. It saved us I-don't-know-how-much, and quit scraping the bottoms out of our SUVs.
