Fresh Air today featured an interview with Neil Young about his new album, with some audio from the album.  The album is a bunch of folk songs such as "Clementine" and "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain", but with very non-traditional heavy rock arrangements and not necessarily any recognizable trace of the familiar tune.

My reaction is that he's stealing Toyboat's schtick.

Don't forget about Pat Boones's very forgettable foray into singing rock too. X.x

Oh I think he's been doing it longer than Toy Boat! He grew up in the same city as I did When we were both teenagers and pre Buffalo Springfield days. Love what he is doing now with the music.

How does it compare the Steeleye Span's schtick?

My impression of Steeleye Span is that they play rock arrangements of familiar songs; Young is changing the songs so much that only the lyrics are recognizable.
