Much has been made of George W. Bush's recent comment: "This idea that we are going to attack Iran is ridiculous. Having said that, all options are on the table." Many people seem to find this contradictory, unclear, or just plain incomprehensible, but it is all too clear to me. It is completely sensible and straightforward. To paraphrase, Bush is saying "It is ridiculous to attack Iran, and I am planning on doing it as soon as I can." I'll admit the candor is surprising, but Bush announcing that he intends to pursue a ridiculous course is hardly a shocker.

Alternatively, it might be read as: "The idea that we are currently preparing to attack Iran is ridiculous. Having said that, all options are on the table, so if you think you can thumb your nose at the international community and build a nuclear weapon because I just said that we weren't planning to attack you, maybe you'd better think again.
