Today's (actually yesterday's) book review is God Stalk by P. C. Hodgell.

This book has floated around the edge of my awareness for decades as something I probably ought to read.  A while back, I actually picked up a used copy of it, intending to read it, but it didn't really make it into the queue of things I would read soon until [livejournal.com profile] jerusha recommended it.  But based on the recommendation, I actually read it, and I'm glad I did.

This book is hard to describe.  It's definitely fantasy.  It's set in a very original and interesting world, and the interesting nature of the world is dribbled out through the story and in fact is part of the story.  It deals with the nature of gods in an interesting way, and also has something to say about honor and responsibility.  But mainly it's a very interesting story.  In a couple of places it gets confusing and surreal, and I had some issues with the main character being too powerful, but overall, the fascinating story, the interesting world and society, and characters that held my attention make it a very good book.

9 out of 10.
