Just a quick shout out to [livejournal.com profile] bedlamhouse and [livejournal.com profile] ladyat for hosting their annual spring housefilk. We had a nice sized circle and I got to sing a bunch of songs and hear many more. [livejournal.com profile] poltr1 joined us and showed off some electronic gadgets as well as his saxophones. [livejournal.com profile] quadrivium had her piano and played a few fine things, and added some magic to a few others. [livejournal.com profile] harperjen was there. [livejournal.com profile] min0taur was there briefly and gave us a couple of songs. Most of the others were locals who aren't AFAIK on LJ and whose names I mostly can't remember, but the music was fine. And the snacks were good, and Wesley served up a fine paella.

Music is a wonderful thing, and a good circle makes it even better. I hope I find some opportunity for more before October.

I know not everyone plays or cares about Magic: the Gathering, but even if you don't play the game, if you like fantasy art, you should take a look at this review of card art from the new set.

Capricon

Safely home from Capricon. I had a good time, got some badly needed emotional recharge, and am frustrated it ended so soon. I spent most of my con in concerts (between the Cafe and main stage), which meant that I was getting concerted out by the time the main event concerts came around Saturday night, with Cheshire Moon giving a great show opening for Alexander James Adams, who is still fabulous. I also made it to open filk both nights and carried my weight in the circles without (I think) being a filk hog.

I didn't make it to any regular programming, even though there was some I kind of wanted to get to, because there was so much music I wanted to hear. Since not being able to do all the things at the con that you'd want to isn't actually a complaint, the main things that were less than perfect were the horrible hotel air (seriously, hotel air is always so dry it's corrosive, but it seemed worse than usual -- is it just me?), and the fact that the parking lot was so jammed that we didn't dare leave on Saturday, so I didn't get to have Pita Inn. The con didn't seem to have more attendees than usual, and although there was a lot of snow around, I don't think snow piles were actually taking up more than a handful of parking spaces. I think the problem was that Valentine's Day was Saturday -- I think there were more mundanes than usual staying in the hotel, and there were certainly a lot of people coming to Saranello's.

I'm sure there were problems at the con that were actually con related, but the concom and staff handled them smoothly enough that I never noticed. Everything seemed to run very well. Kudos especially to the filk and cafe people who put together the parts I was at (and made them so all encompassing that I didn't get to much else).

Went to a new-to-me restaurant in Urbana for dinner this evening. It's a tiny hole-in-the-wall Mexican place called Huarches Moroleon. It's located at Washington and Philo, in a building that I've seen a bunch of places rotate through, but I hadn't been in it for several incarnations.

Turns out it's really good. I'm not exactly knowledgeable when it comes to Mexican food, but a lot of the things on this menu weren't the usual American Mexican restaurant fare. I don't know if that means they're authentic or creative. We started with the traditional chips and salsa, but they had four different salsas to mix and match, and they fry their own tortilla chips which are way better than average. I had enchiladas mole which were wonderful, and there were lots of other things on the menu that looked tempting. The prices were very reasonable -- I think the enchiladas were $8.

So if you're local and in the mood for Mexican, don't settle for El Toro.

I played Standard at FNM last night and then at a Grand Prix trial today. I was playing mostly the same deck, but I tweaked it a bit after last night, and I can't remember exactly what I changed between FNM and the tourney.

I'll give the event today first, because I have the decklist. The event was a disaster for the store -- only 11 people showed up, but the advertised prizes still ahd to be given to the top 8. It wasn't much better for me -- I ended up 1-2-1, with bad tiebreaks, which was 9th place. details inside )

I had done much better last night. details )

Another Thanksgiving weekend is done. Thursday I had Thanksgiving dinner at Holly's with her large fannish chosen family. Then, after stopping by there again for lunch (Peter's risotto is legendary), on to Chambanacon. Chambanacon is small, but it seemed like we'd found a good place for it, in Champaign where it should be. So it was distressing to learn that the hotel has been sold and the new owners are remodeling away all of the space we hold Chambanacon in. More distressing is that our stalwart concom have determined that, thanks to the amount of demand football creates for hotel space on Thanksgiving weekend, there are no available hotels in Champaign that can host the con. (One has the space, but has a policy, apparently not negotiable, that the function space closes at midnight, which is a non-starter.) So the con will be in another city next year. Having to leave Champaign was the main cause of the con's crumbling from an important regional convention into a party, and everyone that still cares is worried that leaving Champaign again will lead to further decline.

But enough worrying about next year. What happened this year? I played some board games, enjoyed conversation, got in a little filking, and had good company. The filking broke up disappointingly early both nights, but what there was was good. It was especially good to hear BJ Willinger again. It seemed much too short, and looking back it seems like I didn't take full advantage of the time I had, but I was happy while I was there, and that's what it's all about.

Windycon

Safely home from Windycon, despite the efforts of the weather, which turned nasty right about the Main Line Station rest area on 57. Two weeks before Thanksgiving is too damn early to have to worry about snow.

The only time I spent more than a few minutes not happy with how I was using the time was the time I was lying in bed tossing and turning and not sleeping, which I don't feel I can blame the con for. There were too many concerts -- I got to 6 but still missed several I either know I would have enjoyed or was curious to find out. Open filk was nice both nights, though more sparsely attended Saturday than I expected. I had to bow out earlier than I wanted Saturday because I was just too tired, but I know I made at least a couple of people happy, so I count the filking a success even though I felt the pain of being out of practice.

Thanks to everyone who offered support and hugs.

I am safely home from OVFF. The trip was smooth. I had a good time, though there was noticeably less sleeping involved than I would like. This despite spending a fair bit of time in bed. I got to have dinner with my cousin Saturday night. I sang some songs without embarrassing myself terribly, heard lots of great music, and saw a lot of friends. I got to catch up a little with some of them. I never did play any games -- too much other stuff going on.

Congratulations to all the Pegasus winners. And commiseration with all my fellow voters, who had to choose among so many worthy choices, especially in the Best Song of Passage category. Wow, those are all good songs. And double wow, the performance of Scarlet Town at the concert -- high point of the whole weekend musically, maybe the whole year. I don't know if there's a recording of that on line, but if there is you should listen to it.

Thanks to everyone who gave me hugs and support, and to everyone who bought calendars, and to the OVFF concom and volunteers for running the show again.

The worst part of the trip was getting a call Saturday night from my mom's pet sitter (after she'd failed to get through to my mom). Maggie seems to have taken a turn for the worse and can't stand up now. She's at the vet now and I'm waiting for another call.

Game Day

The new magic set hit a few weeks ago, which means it was time for Game Day today, and I wished to compete. The first deck I made for this Standard was black/white warriors, and it sometimes did OK, but the more I played with it the less I thought it would go the distance. I tried making a Jeskai shenanigans deck but I did a bad job and it was a dud. Thursday night, thinking I would be playing the warriors deck, I played a few games against Steve Jasper's Abzan midrange deck and he walked over me like a threadbare rug. Yesterday at FNM I lamented that I just didn't have the cards to build an Abzan deck, and Carl agreed to lend me some of the key ones. I also lent him some pieces for a Jeskai deck. I threw the deck together and showed up. I ended up going 3-2, finsihing 6th overall (proving that I don't understand how tiebreaks work, I expected to be several places lower), so I got the top 8 promo card, 2 packs, and a door prize I was happy with, and I had some good matches. So a successful day of magic.

For anyone in or near C-U, this weekend coming up is Prairieland Feed's annual Pet Fair. Several groups with cool animals (that you shouldn't have for pets) exhibit, including EFRC. I believe we will have a couple of the tiger cubs from last year, although it's not yet entirely settled. It's also the best prices of the year on dog food, if you have a dog. Stop by Saturday and say hi to me, or if you can't make it, stop by Sunday even though I won't be there.

The 2015 calendar is out, and everyone should have one on their wall come New Year's! The best way to get one is of course to go visit the center, but if that's not workable for you, and you're going to be somewhere where I am in the next few months, I can sell you one. (I make no profit on these -- I buy them for $15, same as you'd pay in person, and I sell them for the same.) You should also be able to go to the EFRC website and have them mail you one, but you'd have to pay for shipping and stuff.

If you want one from me, give me a shout, and I'll do my best to remember to bring it along.

In case anyone out there communicates with me: my primary (net66) email address is going away. They were bought by a regional comms aggregator years ago which was bought by Cincinnati Bell, and Cincinnati Bell is dumping their dialup business, and doesn't have any other way to give me net access. (I now actually get on the net through my phone, but had the dialup as a backup and to keep the email address.) If you need to email me, you should be able to reach me at (my user name) at gmail.

I haven't written about my magic adventures for a long time. I've been playing draft almost exclusively, and I haven't bothered to write about limited, because it seems to have less interest. But, in spite of not having a lot of the best, most expensive cards for Standard, I have a deck that I enjoy that I feel has a chance to do OK. It's not likely to win the night but it should win some matches and be fun, so I played it. I went 3-1, 3rd place out of 12 players, not too bad.

Sitara

May. 7th, 2014 10:05 pm
tigertoy: (Default)
On a more pleasant and less sensitive note, Mother's Day is coming up Sunday, and since [livejournal.com profile] birder2 is going to be kind of busy that day, we decided that we'd go out to dinner today. I had heard that her favorite Indian restaurant had closed, but I'd also heard in the same conversation that a new Indian restaurant had opened in downtown Urbana. Google found it for me; it's called Sitara. It's on Race between Elm and Main, which I drive past every week or two, but I had been oblivious to it.

The space is small -- it was a bar, the name of which I can't recall. They had several flat-screen TVs running what I assume was a Bollywood musical. (I've never seen any Bollywood fare, I've only heard it discussed on the radio.) I couldn't keep myself from looking at the TV; it was pretty but didn't seem to make much sense. The menu looked fairly promising -- not an extraordinarily large number of choices, but certainly not small. A lot of familiar dishes, but some that I don't recall from other Indian menus as well, it presented the usual dilemma, since pretty much all of the dishes sounded good. We settled on samosas and an appetizer called, if I'm remembering the unfamiliar name right, chicken kusawa. Something like that. The menu described it as having Nepali spices, which sounded novel. [livejournal.com profile] birder2 chose an odd named curry whose name I can't recall, but that had a j and I think a z. I chose lamb kedai. The samosas were tasty, not exceptional, but perfectly good samosas and I like samosas. The chicken appetizer was a surprisingly generous bunch of grilled chicken breast chunks, and the spicing was interesting. My curry was quite delicious, pleasantly spicy to me (which meant it was a bit too much for [livejournal.com profile] birder2 to sample). I had a small taste of hers and it was also tasty.

So, all the things we ate were good, and the prices were quite reasonable by C-U sit down restaurant standards. (I think all the entrees were between $9 and $11, mostly $10.) So, if you're looking for Indian, apparently you can't go to Bombay Grill on First Street any more, but you can go to Sitara instead, and it's a fine choice.

Can anyone recommend a cost-free, ad-free Sudoko game for Windows that doesn't crash all the time? One that meets the first two requirements came as part of the preloaded crap on my computer and has me hooked, but I'm sick of the fact that it crashes so much.

So, I have been playing Magic almost every Friday night, but I've mostly been playing draft, and I've never quite bothered to record my decks. But I decided to play Standard tonight, because I have a deck that was weak months ago but I've actually gotten a few more of the expensive cards that were holding it back, and I felt like playing it. We ended up only having 8 players, and if I'd realized there weren't enough people to go four rounds I would have drafted again. There were more people when I signed up but a couple of them left.

My all-in Gray Merchant deck came in second. Not too bad. deck and details )

A short walk at Kickapoo (couple of miles) today -- don't really feel up to more. But three proper signs of spring:
Spring peepers
Comma butterflies
A brown thrasher singing away

A fine little walk.

Since the weather was attractively springlike, I went to Kennekuk today. The ponds were still frozen over, but I did see one small orange butterfly of indeterminate species.

Capricon

Got back from Capricon an hour or so ago. A fair bit of music, a little gaming, went to one panel, saw a bunch of people. Wasn't organized, didn't have a plan for dinner, didn't end up going to eat with anyone. Friday dinner was a sandwich in the room. Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] birder2 and I both wanted something else, but we didn't find anyone to go to eat with. We thought we'd try to get something delivered but it turned out the wait was going to be 2 hours. The weather was awful and the parking lot was full so we didn't want to give up our parking space, so we tried to go to the hotel restaurant. They were mobbed and had a 1.5 hour wait for a table for 2, so we ended up getting takeout from the hotel restaurant Saranello's. Which at least wasn't another sandwich. They're pretty good but pretty pricey. [livejournal.com profile] almeda did not want to wait until 11 to filk so started a renegade hallway filk, where I had a great time until we moved into the mail room around midnight, where there was more filk for an hour and a half or so. Then had to get up too early this morning, but somehow managed it, and had a good time at Toast and Jam. I played my guitar more in the past 24 hours than I had in the past month -- and that included GAFilk. It was good, but my hands hurt.
