Earlier this afternoon I was practicing guitar a bit -- something I'm not doing as much as I should -- and I did something I've never done before.

I broke a string (while playing -- I've broken one or two while tuning, but that's not the same).

I don't know whether to feel like I'm growing up as a guitarist, or whether I've lost something. I've always felt a little bit smug when I see people break their strings, thinking "I don't break strings. I'm in more control than that."

These strings are way past needing changing, and I was playing "Black Davie's Ride" rather energetically, but I don't think I was being more vigorous than I usually am with that song.

Later on Friday, July 22, I stopped at an overlook just past Wolf Creek Dam on US 127 in southeastern Kentucky.  (I know I said that the bug in the previous post was in Tennessee, but I appear to have been mistaken, because Wolf Lake is in Kentucky.)

As I was checking the map about the name and location of Wolf Lake (which turns out to be in southern Kentucky, not northern Tennessee), I was amused to discover that I apparently drove right through the town of Phil, KY without noticing it.

But that's nowhere near as amusing as the best town name I encountered on the trip.  A few miles north of Chattanooga on US 127, there's a town with a name I didn't believe was for real until I'd seen several different signs confirming that I'd really seen that.  I couldn't make up a name this good.

So here's to Soddy Daisy, Tennessee. I hope you're not offended at my amusement.
