Sonya

In last week's shopping, I picked up a Sonya apple which I had today.

Texture was moderately crisp, just a little soft, but not in an unpleasant way, and not even a hint of mealyness; excellent mouth feel except for slightly too much peel.  Taste was quite sweet, with little tartness, but definitely flavorful.  Not quite up there with my favorite varieties -- I like more tartness -- but definitely a good apple.

Lady Alice

I tried a new apple variety today, Lady Alice.  Not much to write home about, I'm afraid.  A pretty yellow and red apple; fairly crisp texture, but just a little bit soft, short of perfectly crisp.  Sweet, but not tart enough, and not enough flavor to make it worth recommending.  Even a long day outside without very much food wasn't enough to make it yummy.

Shopping this week, they had an apple variety I wasn't familiar with, "Ambrosia".  I bought one.

A nice looking apple, distinctly pointy on the bottom, yellow and red.  Perfect texture; the flesh was firm and crisp, not mealy at all, and the peel was thin and not hard to eat at all.  Good flavor, tart, similar to a good Pink Lady but a little bit milder.

(being another in my occasional series of apple reviews)

I've seen this varietal on offer at local stores a few times, but always at a super-premium price. Last week Meijer had them for no more than Pink Ladies (and $1/lb. less than I recall seeing them before), so I bought one.

Visual: a very pretty apple, variegated between a bright scarlet red and a slightly greenish yellow. Slighty elongated in shape, tending a little bit to a point at the bottom.

Texture: very crisp, bordering on tough, with a fairly thick skin. Mostly satisfying -- certainly no hint of mealyness or mushyness -- but just a little bit too crunchy.

Flavor: pleasantly tart, with some sweetness, but short on any more specific flavor than sweet and tart, so it came off as a little bland. A decent apple, but not a great one.

Honeycrisp

When I've discussed apples before, a number of people have said that the Honeycrisp is the best there is.  I'd tried one before, and wasn't particularly impressed.  But this past week, with still no Pink Ladies on offer, I decided I'd give the Honeycrisp another try -- maybe I just got a poor one.

This apple was the size of a softball, and had a couple of blemishes, but it looked like a good apple.  And when I ate it, it had very nice crisp texture (though it was a bit thick skinned), lots of juice, and great flavor.  Distinctly tart, but sweet as well.  Maybe not quite as good as a perfect Pink Lady, but certainly close.  If this is what they're normally like, I understand why people rave about them.  Too bad this one apple, between its enormous size and huge per-pound price, cost as much as a whole bag of lesser apples.

I bought a Pacific Rose apple -- a variety I was unfamiliar with  -- a couple of days ago, and ate it today.

Texture-wise, this apple was pretty much the Platonic ideal of apple.  Very crisp, not even the faintest hint of mushy or mealy, but not at all hard to chew, with a very unobtrusive peel, and very juicy.

Flavor-wise, I'm sad to say, it didn't score anywhere near as high.  Too sweet, very little tartness, and very little other flavor.

I still think the Pink Lady is the best apple variety around.  Hopefully the stores around here will have them again soon.
